Parents: Prevent the summer brain drain!

We are now taking sign ups for our Summer Institute 2011!

Give your child a jump-start for the next school year at Summer Institute 2011.  While at Summer Institute 2011, students will learn age-appropriate content standards in a cool and exciting way.

New Vaccination Requirement

Today, July 1, marks the day that all private or public school students in grades 7 through 12  must provide proof that they have been given the vaccination for whooping cough (pertussis).  California requires immunizations, which covers whooping cough, before entering kindergarten. Most children need another booster around 11 years old.

We are having a great time in our Summer Institute 2011!  Students made shirts that they wear on a daily basis.  kindergarteners and first graders are working on their plays, writing sentences, and charting the growth of our vegetables in the farmers market.  Second through fifth graders practice their multiplication facts daily, as well as writing their plays, and studying facts about a state of their choosing.  Junior high and high school are practicing their algebraic concepts daily, working on a modern American war, and developing plays based on American folklore.

Thank you AMVETS Post #20!

Children from the AMVETS Post #20 helped build, plant, and install a vegetable garden and irrigation system for the Summer Institute 2011.  Many of these children will be participating in the Summer Institute 2011 Farmers Market.

Each child planted at least one plant of their choice.  We planted rosemary, basil, jalapeños, cilantro, tomatoes, green onions, several different types of melons.  Come by when you get a chance and watch us grow!

Also, Summer Institute 2011 students will be coordinating a Farmers Market, selling many of our organic vegetables.  So stay tuned and see you soon!

Here are more pictures from yesterday’s planting event!

Food Revolution

I particularly enjoyed this episode of Food Revolution.  Jamie Oliver teaches a group of students what are the key ingredients in the typical ice cream sundaes we love so much.  Jaime Oliver rule of thumb: If you can’t pronounce it, don’t eat it.
